Before the start of the ATP 500 in Basel, Stanislas Wawrinka (40 years old, 158 ATP) talked about his retirement from tennis and announced that he would like to play again in 2026, with the goal of winning another title.
Stanislas Wawrinka is in Switzerland, in Basel, where, in the inaugural round, he will duel with the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (26 years old, 52 ATP). In case of success, the 40-year-old player will meet him in the second round either the Norwegian Casper Ruud (26 years old, 11 ATP) or the French Quentin Halys (28 years old, 78 ATP).
Stan Wawrinka: “I know the end is very close. I hope to improve a little next year”
Back in his home country, Wawrinka spoke about his retirement from tennis, explaining that it is a personal decision that must be taken very carefully.
“Ending a career is very personal. We all have different desires, you have to feel that. We will see if there will be a new season, for now we will finish this one. I live in the present, I try to get the most out of it,” explained the triple Grand Slam winner, quoted by L'Equipe.
“I know the end is very close, we all have an expiration date and at some point we will hang up our rackets. I am happy to be here in Basel and then I will play in Athens. But, yes, I hope to improve a little next year,” added Wawrinka.
According to the aforementioned source, the former world number 3 wants to win one more trophy before ending his career:
“Obviously, the odds are higher in the Challenger circuit than in the ATP“said Wawrinka realistically. “I'm trying to maintain the best possible level so that I can go as far as I can in these tournaments. I want to push my limits and then we'll see if the results will follow or not. As long as the motivation is there, I want to push myself,” he concluded.
In 2025, Stan Wawrinka participated in 2 tournaments in Romania. At the one in Bucharest, the Swiss was eliminated in the 2nd round, score 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, by Pedro Martinez and, at the one in Iasi, he lost in the semifinals, score 2-6, 6-7 (4), against Elmer Moller.
