Folk calendar

Sergey Zimny

On this day the memory of two saints who bore the name Sergius is celebrated. The first of them, St. Sergius of Pechersk, lived in the 13th century. Another saint is Sergius of Nurom, or Vologda, who lived in the 14th and 15th centuries.

“Sergei is starting winter,” people said and were not surprised at the frosts that could strike on that day. However, if snow fell that day, and the trees had not yet completely shed their leaves, real winter was not expected soon – not earlier than on Matryona – “Sergei beats the grass with frost, but Matryona does not allow winter to turn back.”
