US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold talks in the coming days to prepare a new summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said on Thursday, according to Reuters.

The Russian official said the date of the summit will depend on how preparations progress.

Ushakov made the statements during a press conference about the telephone conversation between Putin and Trump, the eighth this year, which, according to him, took place at the initiative of Moscow.

The Russian official said that Trump proposed Budapest as the venue for the summit and that Putin immediately agreed.

Ushakov's statement made it clear that Putin reiterated to Trump his position on the state of the war in Ukraine, saying that Russian troops have the strategic initiative along the entire front line.

Ushakov added that the two also discussed the possible delivery of US Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, requested by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Vladimir Putin reiterated his thesis that Tomahawk missiles will not change the situation on the battlefield, but will cause significant damage to the relations between our countries, without mentioning the prospects for a peaceful resolution“, Ushakov told reporters.

Trump reportedly told Putin that he would take into account what the Russian leader said

According to him, Trump told Putin that he would take into account what the Russian president said during the phone call when he meets with Zelenskiy in Washington on Friday.

Ushakov also stated that Trump spoke of the enormous potential for economic cooperation between the United States and Russia once the war in Ukraine ends.
