Germany is preparing to deport young Syrians from the country, even if they do not have a criminal record, the Berlin Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday, DPA reports.
A ministry spokesman confirmed that the asylum applications from Syrians began.
A first objective – as the Interior Minister Alexander Dobindt said on Sunday, for the newspaper Bild – is to return to Syria “young work” requesting asylum.
All deportations require an agreement with the new Government of Damascus.
Germany has not carried out direct deportations in Syria since 2012, due to the civil war. Resuming the processing of asylum applications is a first step in this direction, notes the DPA.
In cases where the Syrians were ordered to leave in recent years, they have usually been transferred to another EU country responsible for their asylum application, depending on the border point through which they first entered the community bloc.
But the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's repression in December 2024 changed Berlin's point of view.
The center-right coalition of the Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who took over the mandate in May, promised that he would adopt a firm position in terms of migration, including rejecting several asylum applicants-especially those with criminal records.
In addition, Dobrint wants to refuse the asylum of the Syrians who have fled to Germany and return to visit their native country.
