On this day, two saints are especially honored – the martyr Foku and the Prophet Ion.
In Rus', this day was noted for a ban on eating fish – in memory of the stay of Jonah in the womb of the whale. But in abundance on the table there was a radish – the peasants finished cleaning this vegetable. As a rule, it was served with salt, onions and kvass.
Russian people revered Foku as a defender from fires, as well as the Savior of drowning. The corresponding prayers were pronounced to him on this day.
