Today in Ukraine there are 340 political parties, and the peaks of their registration historically coincided with the elections and the change of power, and the absolute record was set in 2015 – 73 new parties.
At the same time, the state actively “cleans” the political space. Dozens of parties are liquidated due to many years of non -participation in the elections. After a full -scale invasion, this process acquired a new dimension, therefore, the activities of 21 political power are prohibited for national security reasons.
Despite the formal existence of hundreds of parties, real political competition is limited, which indicates an increase in the regulatory role of the state in the formation of a political landscape.
The lawyer notes that this transformation puts new challenges for the search for the balance between the protection of statehood and the restriction of political freedoms.
