A Krasnoyarsk woman was hospitalized with anemia due to an unbalanced diet during Lent. This was reported in the Krasnoyarsk regional clinical hospital.

The woman arrived at the institution already unconscious. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with anemia. As it turned out, she had been strictly fasting for the past week and ate mainly apples and other plant foods low in iron. At the same time, her ferritin and hemoglobin levels were initially reduced, and a sharp change in diet provoked a deterioration.

Dietician at the regional hospital Ilya Yushkov reminds: even during periods of restrictions, nutrition should remain balanced. To avoid iron and protein deficiency, he advises including plant sources of iron in the Lenten menu – legumes, buckwheat, mushrooms, tofu and greens.

The absorption of non-heme iron is increased by vitamin C, so it is useful to supplement dishes with fresh vegetables, herbs or citrus fruits. But it is better not to drink tea and coffee immediately after meals – they interfere with the absorption of iron.

To maintain protein levels, your diet should include quinoa, oatmeal, nuts, seeds and soy products. Yushkov paid special attention to pumpkin seeds – they contain both protein and iron.

If a person has chronic diseases or a tendency to anemia, it is better to consult a doctor before long-term dietary restrictions. Weakness, dizziness and pale skin are a reason to check your hemoglobin level.
