Presented in China as a “infrastructure miracle”, the bridge is designed to stimulate tourism and economic growth in one of the least developed regions of the country, writes NBC.

The highest bridge in the world was inaugurated on Sunday in China, dethroning another bridge in China, and even one of the same province.

The Bridge Bridge of the Great Canyon Huajiang rises about 620 meters above a river and a gorge in the province of Guizhou, southern China.

By comparison, the bridge is 289 meters higher than the Millau viaduct in France.

According to the Chinese press, the new Guizhou bridge also sets a record as the longest bridge in the world in a mountain region, with a length of 1,400 meters.

The mega-project, completed in three years and eight months, will reduce the travel time between the two banks of the canyon from two hours to two minutes and will connect the main tourist attractions, officials said.

The bridge has a high -speed glass lift that can carry visitors to a cafe located 792 meters above the river. Visitors can also try Bungee Jumping or walk on the glass walkway 579 meters high.

The province of Guizhou, which has a population of about 40 million inhabitants, has benefited in the last decades of an infrastructure campaign, as part of the declared efforts of the Chinese government.

Currently, it has over 32,000 completed or under construction bridges, compared to about 2,900 in the 1980s.

Guizhou also houses the second height in the world, the Duge Bridge, inaugurated in 2016.
