The Court of Cassation in Italy confirmed the sentence against Ancăi Egorov, a Romanian accused of serious acts committed on Giuseppine Marcovecchio, a pensioner from the province of Asti.

The process, intensely publicized in the Italian press, has shown light details about how the Romanian, committed to take care of the 80-year-old, has come to turn this relationship into a modern form of slavery.

“She was a master of my life.”

Giuseppina Marcovecchio, now 80 years old, told in court that she was practically taken from her life environment and taken to Romania, in Galaţi, where she remained for eight years under the total control of the caretaker.

“She was a master of my life,” said the old woman, describing the years in which she did not have the freedom to make decisions for herself and in which she was gradually devoid of all her savings.

“Eight years of my life were stolen. I lived like in a prison,” said the pensioner.

The investigations confirmed that the Romanian took advantage of the depression of the retirement and emptied its accounts, learning over 300,000 euros. Some of the money was invested in a tobaccory in Santo Stefano Belbo, the Piedmont region, but the business, passed on behalf of the caretaker, went bankrupt. Finally, the entire wealth of the Italian retirement has been lost, without the possibility of recovery.

In this context, the Italian prosecutors accuse Anca Egorov of deception of a person without discernment and self -defense.

Initially, in the first instance, the Romanian was sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison and forced to pay 300,000 euros. In the appeal, the punishment was reduced to 4 years and 3 months of detention, but now the Court of Cassation has definitively confirmed the decision, ending a process that lasted several years.

For the Romanian, the execution of the punishment follows, and the case remains a warning about the dangers of addiction relationships and the lack of protection of the vulnerable elderly.
