A city of sin in crisis. Why is Las Vegas losing popularity?

From a tourist point of view, it was a failed year for Vegas. Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) reports that the number of visitors to the city in June fell by 11.3 percent. compared to last year. The turnout at conferences and hotels' occupancy also fell. The total number of visitors in the first half of 2025 fell by 7.3 percent. Revenues from games have increased – a signal that those who come are still playing. But consumer expenses, including restaurants and bars and at sellers of clothing and jewelry, have dropped by millions of dollars in the last 11 months compared to the previous period. Some casinos dismissed employees.

Why is this happening? There is no one simple answer. Many factors are at stake: the shaky state of the economy, tightened American immigration regulations, the effects of fires in California, which made some potential tourists at home. This year, there were also great events that have attracted crowds in recent years, such as March Madness or Super Bowl, which could give an injection in 2025. There are still Formula 1, Raiders and what is happening in SPHERE, where Backstreet Boys occurs, but these attractions are extremely expensive when many travelers especially feel price pressure.

Las Vegas relatively recently gained a reputation of the place of expensive and “plundering” people at every opportunity. The costs of aviation tickets, hotel rooms, food, drinks and even parking have soared up. The character of the city has also changed. Instead of being a slightly shady American city of vice, Vegas has gone through a kind of “glow-up”, trying to broaden its attractiveness. The plus is that today a wider audience can consider going to Vegas than in the past. Minus – Vegas is more and more like many other places, which is why it loses to competitors with similar (or even lower) prices, especially if visitors do not have exceptional impressions.

The mentality of visitors begins to change, who think: “I can go to Las Vegas, but it will be a torment or I can go to Cancún” – says Michael Schoenberger, a hotel management professor at College of Southern Nevada. “This is a cumulative effect that is just beginning to reveal,” he adds.

Donald Trump deepened the problem

Although the conversation about “which is wrong in Las Vegas” is now gaining momentum, problems have been going on for a long time – says Amanda Berlarmino, an adjunct at the Hotel Department of the Nevada University in Las Vegas. – To be honest, we have been struggling with a decrease in the number of visitors since the pandemic – says.

In her opinion, tourism from Asia did not rebuild, and This year, the number of other foreign tourists has also dropped, including – importantly – from Canada, partly by the hostile attitude of President Donald Trump towards the northern neighbors of America. Foreign guests usually stay longer than the country who fall on the weekend, so their withdrawal strikes more.

The national image is also not particularly pink. Fears of the economy can keep Americans at home. The disproportionately large part of the tourists in Las Vegas are Californians, but the number of vehicles crossing the border of California and Nevada on the Intercosal Motor No. 15 fell by 4.3 percent in June. compared to the same month last year. Berlarmino explains this largely with fires that hit the southern California at the beginning of the year. Schoenberger notes that difficulties related to the construction of the highway were also a problem.

There is no drama yet, but the prices deter

Steve Hill, president and general director of LVCVA, says that although these problems are not perfect, Las Vegas saw worse times in the recent past. – This is not a crisis situation we experienced during a pandemic or a long -lasting hole after the so -called great recession – he says.

In addition to these more sudden problems, one serious difficulty, which increased gradually, maybe just reaches a turning point: prices. Simply put, Las Vegas is extremely expensive.

For a long time, Las Vegas's proposal was that you can get and stop there relatively cheaply, because when people arrived, the amount they spent on gambling in casinos and departments, it has more than compensated. But it's out of date. Flights to the city can still be slightly cheaper than for some other destinations, but they do not differ so much from traveling to New Orleans, Miami or Washington. It is similar with hotels, although prices are hesitant.

A typical clientele has also changed. While the traditional Las Vegas market was people over 60, who were usually cautious in spending money, now more people of the greatest earnings come and demand services and premium experiences. The economy of resorts has also changed. Gambling is no longer the most important source of income – they are hotel rooms, food and drinks and events. Connect it all with inflation and more and more tense consumer budgets, and you will understand why some shorten stays or completely give up.

We are now a more expensive market than ever before – says Berlarmino.

Many casinos and hotels in Las Vegas began to charge parking fees in the mid -2010, and also add the so -called Resort Fees (Additional fees for the use of the ministry's facilities). During my last four -day stay in Cosmopolitan, the hotel was $ 249.44. (over PLN 900) with taxes. Although there are ways to take a cheap stay in Las Vegas – stopping in budget hotels away from strip (main street with casinos), buying food and alcohol in a store or completely giving up alcohol – all these additional fees can make visitors feel cheated.

“From the beginning of Pandemia and after it, we introduced many pain points for visitors, which were not historically previously,” says Schoenberger. – Why do we make people pay as much as they cost in New York, I have no idea – he adds.

The gambling map has changed

Steve Hill says that the narrative about high costs in Vegas is “exaggerated” and that there are “all possible ways” to survive budget residence. – We have 150,000 Rooms and at the moment their prices probably range from $ 9 to $ 600. – claims. He adds that the slowing down the number of visitors meant that some hotels have lowered prices.

Gambling, which has become more widely available throughout the United States, is both a blessing and a curse for Las Vegas. In the past it was one of the two main places in the USA (next to Atlantic City), where the plants could be legally bet. On the one hand, people who have a “gambling” can now satisfy her within a few hours of driving from home. On the other hand – gambling proliferation can also mean that more people will get a habit of betting at all.

Chris Grove, an investor in the sports plant industry at ACIES Investments, says that the development of sports plants is for Vegas “pure net profit”. He gives people a foretaste of gambling, and if they like it, it can inspire them to come to the largest place in America to do it.

He compares this to the poker boom from the early 2000s. – Poker online became really popular and you could ask: Did this discourage people from coming to Vegas to play poker? The answer is: no – says Grove.

In addition, summer is a slow period for sports plants. If people sat at home and bet through applications, instead of going to Vegas, they would rather do it during the NFL season (American Football League) and during March Madness (finals of the NCAA basketball league).

Other events in Vegas are a mixed image. Formula 1, which returned to Las Vegas in 2023, attracts tourists, but preparations for it cause interference in traffic – says Schoenberger. In the MGM Resorts quarterly report, the CEO of Bill Hornbuckle said that Las Vegas remains “fundamentally solid”, and a 9 % decrease in profits from departments at strip at the strip blamed for “particularly troublesome renovation” in MGM Grand and weaker reservations in the middle of the week in two cheaper hotels. In turn, Caesars informed in a quarterly report that despite the weaker demand for hotel services, the results from gambling were decent.

“Upper one -third of the market is still doing extremely well,” says Hill from LVCVA. – But when we go down to the middle of the third part, the problem becomes more severe, because visitors are more aware of the budget – he adds.

Las Vegas still has the future?

It tempts to slow down in Las Vegas to some deeper sense. Maybe it's just a temporary slump, but what if it's a recession indicator? Or a sign of times and proof that Las Vegas is over?

Announced that the slow summer is the end of the city of sin we know would be a bit premature. Just like the claim that this is a reliable sign of recession. However, it seems that Vegas is in a kind of strange suspension, even if temporary. This is a place that gives the impression of stopped in time – apart from some costumes and what flies on television, it is difficult to say whether you are at the casino in 2010 or in 2025. Finally, DJ Paula D is played there known from “Jersey Shore”.

Where it becomes modern – e.g. by adding a sphere arena or NFL Raiders team – he is still learning logistics. He responds to consumer demand for premium experience, but he is still facing clients who may not be ready to pay premium prices. If a trip to Vegas costs as much as a vacation in New York, San Francisco, Miami, and even in Mexico, you can think twice how much value is really attributed to the experience of the city of sin – especially when the main distinguishing feature is that you are surrounded by tables and machines designed to get money from you.

To make it clear: Las Vegas is cute. Gambling is fun – If it is grown responsibly. The shows are great, hotels are comfortable. Night life offers a large dose of (responsible) debauchery, and in day the city is quite familiar with families. When there is no heat, the outdoor attractions are also really great. Despite the videos, photos and memes circulating on the internet, the city was not empty (anyway, each place can be shown as deserted if you choose the right time of the day).

The city may just undergo a light moment of return – not so much changes its identity as it tries to find it in culture and economy that change around it.

Las Vegas still attracts people, because it is a place you can come to and no matter where you are from the world, it looks different – says Schoenberger.
