Criticized after the withdrawal from Lîman
In 2022, the general led the central military district of Russia and the “Center” group in Ukraine. After the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Ukrainian city of Lîman, Lapin was harshly criticized by the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadîrov.
Later, he was appointed to the command of the Leningrad Military District, where he also led the “North” group both in Ukraine and on the Ukrainian border, reported the RBC, citing an unidentified source, according to Reuters.
In August 2025, Lapin was replaced by General-Colonel Evgheni Nikiforov, thus losing the functions of military management.
