Electricity Price Cap Could Hinder Winter Imports, Warns Expert

Electricity Price Cap Concern

An expert has indicated that recent Russian attacks have undermined the most optimistic winter scenario for electricity generation, which expected a capacity of 15.5 GW without imports. The critical scenario now anticipates a drop in available capacity to between 11 and 12 GW, while a deeper crisis may see this fall to just 8 GW. In such circumstances, securing electricity imports becomes crucial.

Omelchenko highlighted the significant concerns regarding import capabilities, which are limited to 2.5 GW. However, he raised the issue of price caps, explaining that electricity prices in neighboring countries might be higher than those in Ukraine. If the purchase price exceeds the established cap in the Ukrainian market, imports may be technically feasible but economically unviable.

“The physical capacity for imports may exist, but the commercial viability does not,” Omelchenko stated. “No one will buy at a loss.”
