Demolition of Bydgoszcz Furniture Factory Paves Way for New Housing Development

The Bydgoszcz Furniture Factory is currently in liquidation, following reports late last year about the end of production, factory closure, and the layoff of 170 employees. Now, there is no trace of the factory building, as a construction site has taken its place. According to “Express Bydgoski,” the site will be transformed into a new residential neighborhood tentatively named Stary Fordon, after the district in Bydgoszcz.
The new landowner, Budlex, has confirmed the plans, stating on their website that the project will feature residential buildings with green courtyards, recreational areas, and commercial spaces. Sales of residential units are expected to begin soon.
The Bydgoszcz Furniture Factory has a rich history, having been established before the end of the 19th century, making it one of Poland’s oldest furniture companies. It was recently part of the international IMS Group, a leader in the European furniture market. Their products were not only supplied to thousands of Polish households but also exported abroad.
In late 2025, news surfaced regarding the factory’s liquidation and the transfer of the land to the new owner. According to “Express Bydgoski,” citing the company’s group layoff regulations, the factory’s troubles and ultimate closure were due in part to a sustained trend among consumers to reduce furniture purchases. After a brief surge in sales during the COVID-19 pandemic, a sharp decline followed, leading to financial difficulties for the company. At that time, the Bydgoszcz Factory operated at two locations, but the owner decided to retain the second facility in Chełmno, where some of the Bydgoszcz staff transitioned. Maintaining two factories was deemed economically unviable.
