Slovakia to Resume Government Talks with Russia for First Time Since 2022

Slovakia is set to hold its first intergovernmental negotiations with Russia since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to reports, the discussions will focus on vital topics such as the supply of Russian oil and gas, nuclear energy, and economic and scientific-technical cooperation.
In addition to energy, the parties plan to address issues related to agriculture, ecology, sports, and culture. Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that while the country seeks to enhance its relationship with Russia, it will continue to base its approach on its commitments as a member of the European Union and NATO, allowing for a dialogue space.

- Currently, EU regulations permit member states to import Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) only under long-term contracts. A complete ban on Russian LNG imports by the EU will take effect on January 1, 2027, with a prohibition on pipeline gas imports later that same year.
- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has previously criticized the EU sanctions on Russia and blamed Ukraine for interrupting the transit of Russian oil to Slovakia at the beginning of 2026. Ukrainian officials stated that disruptions were caused by Russian attacks.
