Czech Prime Minister Criticizes US-Russia Diesel Agreement as Blow to Europe

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has labeled the recent agreement between the United States and Russia concerning the sale of Russian diesel fuel as “a major blow to Europe.” He expressed surprise at Washington’s decision, especially in light of his previous criticism of the European Union’s (EU) hydrocarbon purchases from Russia, according to reports from EFE and Agerpres.

Babis stated, “I understand that President Donald Trump is facing elections soon, but for Europe, this is a significant setback. We will see what our European colleagues have to say about this,” during comments made Saturday evening, as reported by the CTK news agency.

The Czech leader deemed the pact unexpected, given Trump’s repeated criticism of European nations for their acquisition of Russian hydrocarbons, which he argued fund Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

“If Europe does not understand that it must finally take action after this, things will not end well,” Babis remarked, noting that EU leaders are scheduled to meet the following Thursday and Friday.

This criticism from Babis comes from a politician who aligns with many of Trump’s positions, particularly regarding immigration. Since taking office in December 2025, he has also halted Czech funding for military assistance to Ukraine.
