On Tuesday, the European Commission approved state aid for the first Polish nuclear power plant. According to representatives of the government and the investor, the decision provides grounds for electricity from this power plant to cost less than PLN 500 per MWh. The first block of the power plant is to be built by 2036. Jakub Wiech from the Energetyka24 portal said on Wednesday in the PAP Studio that ultimately up to 30 percent Polish energy will come from nuclear energy.

– You could say that we will use the atom as such a safe basis. Basics in this technical sense, because it will be power that works with a utilization factor of approximately over 90 percent, so it works almost all the time, with a break for fuel replacement and technical service. But it is also stabilization in the economic sense, because the nuclear power plants that will operate in Poland, for example the first one, will provide energy at a fixed price basically throughout the 21st century. So it will be a safe element of the mix at the economic level and it will enable us to achieve some stabilization and probably also reduce energy prices in our country – said Jakub Wiech.

Wiech said that a safe energy mix consists of: price acceptability of energy, security understood as uninterrupted and reliable supplies, as well as the issue of environmental and climate protection. As he emphasized, “these three combined elements should function within our energy mix.”

– How to achieve them technologically? Here we have a whole range of technologies, some of which we know are already quite well developed, for example nuclear energy, but also renewable sources. Others are developing very quickly and will probably play a large role in the energy industry in the near future, such as energy storage in the form of batteries. Still others will be rather declining technologies, such as conventional power plants using fossil fuels, he said.

The expert emphasized that a nuclear power plant is a safe source of energy. He gave as an example that The facility currently under construction should withstand the impact of a large passenger aircraft. This includes: safety issues resulted in the abandonment of the construction of the nuclear power plant in Żarnowiec in 1990. This happened a few years after the Chernobyl disaster, and was additionally influenced by the protests of miners concerned about coal mining. Another attempt to build a nuclear power plant in Poland took place in 2009, but it also failed. Preparations for the construction of a nuclear power plant started again in 2015.
