EU Approves Major Sanctions Against Russia Focused on Defense Sector

The European Union is preparing to implement a significant sanctions package aimed at Russia, with the official approval expected on October 12. Reports indicate that over half of the new sanctions are linked to the production of Russian ballistic missiles, including the 9M723 Iskander-M.
The sanctions will target companies involved in missile testing and research, as well as those producing solid rocket fuel, engines, and specialized textile materials including synthetic and carbon fibers.
According to Reuters, Russia has intensified its ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine amid dwindling stockpiles of interceptor missiles for American Patriot systems. The U.S. is reportedly redeploying military resources to the Persian Gulf, providing Moscow with an opportunity.
In addition to missile-related companies, the sanctions will also affect drone manufacturers, shipbuilding companies servicing submarines, and 77 Russian politicians who campaigned in occupied territories of Ukraine.
The EU has also sanctioned seven individuals and entities from North Korea for their support of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
These measures are a continuation of the EU’s efforts to impose financial restrictions on Russia, following the approval of the 21st sanctions package in July, which was touted as the largest in four years of full-scale war.
