Zelensky Calls for F-16 Maintenance to Shift from Europe to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the relocation of F-16 fighter jet maintenance operations from Europe to Ukraine. He highlighted that the aircraft are currently undergoing technical servicing.
Zelensky noted that the prolonged wait for the return of these jets is causing Ukraine to “waste precious time,” particularly when they are crucial for the protection of the nation’s airspace.
He emphasized that moving maintenance tasks closer to the conflict zone would enable faster returns to operational status. Zelensky also criticized the governments of the United States and Europe for what he perceives as a lack of political will to exert pressure on Russia’s illegitimate President Vladimir Putin to end the war. He asserted that these countries possess economic and diplomatic leverage over Moscow.
Background
- The Wall Street Journal reported on September 29 that prolonged delays in maintenance have rendered part of Ukraine’s F-16 fleet inoperative, exacerbating the vulnerability of the nation’s air defense. The F-16 is considered the best countermeasure against the jet drones that Russia continually uses to attack Ukraine.
- On October 1, Zelensky announced that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and the presidential office team will verify agreements with partners regarding the provision of necessary ammunition for the F-16s.
