Rise in Aesthetic Medicine Fueled by Weight Loss Drugs Like Ozempic

The rise of weight loss medications, particularly Ozempic and Wegovy, is creating new business opportunities for the aesthetic medicine sector. An increasing number of patients who rapidly lose weight through GLP-1 therapy are seeking treatments to improve their skin and body appearance.
Patients using GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy are increasingly turning to plastic surgeons and aesthetic medicine specialists.
While these medications effectively reduce body weight, rapid weight loss can lead to physical changes, prompting some individuals to consider further procedures.
New Opportunities for the Aesthetic Market
According to the German Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the growing popularity of obesity medications is driving demand for body contouring and plastic surgeries. An analysis by the organization found that nearly two-thirds of surveyed specialists reported an increase in patients seeking treatment following significant weight loss.
This rise is primarily attributed to changes in body and facial appearance after quick weight loss.
Surge in Surgeries
- abdominoplasty,
- thigh lifting,
- facelifts,
- skin tightening treatments.
According to “Süddeutsche Zeitung,” doctors have been observing a growing number of patients interested in aesthetic corrections due to GLP-1 therapy for about two years. The most frequently reported issues involve excess sagging skin and changes in facial appearance caused by rapid fat loss. Among specialists, the term “Ozempic face” has emerged, describing a more sunken facial appearance following significant weight reduction.
Expanding Pool of Potential Clients
This trend signifies the emergence of a new market segment for aesthetic clinics. Data from research firm IQVIA indicates that by the end of 2024, nearly 100,000 individuals in Germany will have been prescribed obesity medications privately.
Experts believe that the current number is even higher, as interest in GLP-1 drugs continues to rise.
