The disruptions have forced a halt to all flight operations at Italy’s fifth busiest airport and the largest in Sicily, with services suspended until 21:59 GMT.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines regarding the status of their flights before heading to the airport. The operator stated that further updates would be provided as the situation develops.
Mount Etna, the highest and one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, frequently disrupts flights to and from Catania Airport. The intensity of ash emissions has been particularly severe this summer, impacting thousands of travelers during the peak holiday season.
