German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently met with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, expressing the necessity for Russia to be open to peace negotiations concerning Ukraine. Baerbock described the conversation as “intense,” although no agreement was reached on key issues.
“I urged him to de-escalate the situation, particularly regarding the circumstances in Ukraine. However, this has not yet found receptive ears,” she stated.
During the meeting, Baerbock condemned the recent drone attacks in Leipzig, labeling them as an escalation. She warned Russia that such actions could not continue, asserting that Germany would defend itself and respond appropriately.
The discussions also touched upon the export of grain from Ukraine and Russia, with Baerbock highlighting its significance for Global South countries, noting that Egypt receives a third of its grain supplies from Ukraine.
“I strongly advised him to be open to negotiations. Ukraine is willing to talk, and Russia should be too,” Baerbock emphasized.
Baerbock explained her willingness to meet was a response to her colleagues’ calls for direct dialogue with Russia. She expressed concern that Europeans should not leave communication with Russia solely to the Americans.
Moreover, she reiterated Germany’s continued support for Ukraine and its plan to impose economic pressure on Russia. “I am not negotiating on behalf of Ukraine; that is for the Ukrainians to do. I urge Russia to engage in discussions with Ukraine,” she stressed.
Baerbock noted that further negotiations heavily depend on Russia’s actions, asserting they are possible only if Moscow is willing to engage in constructive dialogue and halt its aggression against Ukraine.
