UN General Assembly in New York Set to Address Global Conflicts and AI

Next week, nearly 130 heads of state will convene in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, a meeting overshadowed by escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, heightened concerns about artificial intelligence, and financial and political pressures on the organization, according to reports from Reuters.

U.S. President Donald Trump will return to the UN podium for the second consecutive year. His administration had previously reduced U.S. contributions and withdrawn from several UN agencies. The United States managed to retain its voting rights in the General Assembly after recently paying $725 million, though it still owes over $1 billion to the organization.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping will not attend the New York meeting, opting to hold direct discussions with Trump in Washington on Thursday. This situation raises questions about the UN’s ability to effectively manage major global crises.

The UN is also preparing for a leadership transition, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to conclude his term at the end of 2026, with no clear frontrunner currently identified for his successor.
