Evacuation route from Vilnius to Poland in case of war
In response to potential wartime threats, Lithuania has outlined an evacuation plan for residents of its capital, Vilnius. One of the three primary evacuation routes will direct citizens toward the Polish border. Authorities in Poland’s Podlaskie Voivodeship are already making arrangements to facilitate transit for residents from the Baltic countries.
The Lithuanian strategy specifies that the timing and sequence of evacuations will be contingent on the nature and scale of the danger. “A year ago, the government presented an updated plan which includes Poland as a key evacuation direction from the capital. The remaining routes head north and west,” shared Žygimantas Solovjovas, a spokesperson for Vilnius’ civil defense department.
Solovjovas noted that evacuations are intended to commence before any immediate threat arises. He further cautioned that residents should not expect to use evacuation routes during an attack, emphasizing the need to seek shelter in such events.
“One of the motivations behind this plan was to condition residents to understand that evacuation should be a controlled process,” he added.

- In recent years, European political and military leaders have repeatedly warned of the potential for a Russian assault. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Russia may target NATO by 2029, although Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Broeker suggested it could happen sooner.
