Approximately 50,000 pilgrims visited Uman this year, contributing around 25 million UAH in tourist taxes, as reported by the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine. He highlighted that this amount sets a new record, surpassing figures not only from previous years but also during the ongoing conflict.
While acknowledging that some visitors may behave poorly, he urged the public not to generalize negative behaviors as representative of all pilgrims. “Those who come to visit should respect the place, its residents, and its laws. Criticizing specific misconduct is valid; however, it should not turn into hatred towards an entire community,” he stated.
In addition to the tourist tax, the Rabbi noted that pilgrims also spend money on rental accommodations, transportation, food, restaurants, and shopping, positively impacting local residents’ incomes.
This year, many pilgrims reported significant increases in the cost of food and housing in Uman, with some spending thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on travel and lodging.
He further encouraged a broader perspective before making negative comments about all Hasidim and pilgrims, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between individual actions and collective identities.
