A Greek Air Force fighter jet crashed on Saturday during an airshow held north of Athens, resulting in a fire that produced large plumes of black smoke visible to the thousands of attendees, according to reports.
Fortunately, no members of the audience were injured in the incident involving the two-seat Phantom F-4 jet, which went down during a low-altitude maneuver.
The Greek Air Force officials did not immediately provide updates on the condition of the two crew members aboard the aircraft. Rescue operations were hampered by the fire that erupted at the Tanagra airbase, located approximately 60 kilometers north of Athens.
In response to the blaze, eleven firefighting planes and helicopters joined 85 firefighters in efforts to contain the flames. The fire was kept at a considerable distance from the area where spectators were gathered during Athens Flying Week, an annual airshow event.
