Former UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer Resigns from Parliament

Former UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared his intention to resign from Parliament, a decision made less than three months after he stepped down as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party. He has been representing the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in London, which will now need to hold a by-election following his resignation.

In a statement to the Camden New Journal, Starmer expressed that it has been a “privilege and immense honor” to serve his constituency for 11 years, but he now intends to focus on “international affairs.” He resigned from the premiership on June 22, emotionally announcing his departure from both 10 Downing Street and the leadership of the Labour Party amid scandals that had shaken confidence in his government, including issues related to the Epstein case.

The decision to also leave Parliament comes after weeks of speculation regarding his intentions. Shortly after his resignation as Prime Minister, Starmer had stated in an interview with the BBC that he would remain a Member of Parliament until the next general elections.

However, in his latest announcement, he stated he is ready to “pass the baton to a successor.” Starmer noted, “From now on, I will concentrate on other matters, including international affairs such as defense, security, trade, and technology, in a rapidly changing world.”

He also reiterated his commitment to continue fighting against violence towards women and girls, a cause that has always been important to him. “This is work I began before becoming an MP and I am determined to continue it even after my parliamentary career ends. Thus, my focus will be on international affairs, as well as my ongoing efforts against violence towards women and girls,” the Labour politician emphasized.
