Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristun Frostadottir has characterized the rejection by her citizens of resuming European Union accession negotiations as not a “failure,” but rather a “victory for democracy.” In her remarks, she emphasized, “I want to be absolutely clear: this government will not resume accession negotiations during this legislative term,” which is set to continue until 2028. The European Union has also expressed its respect for the democratic choice made by the Icelandic people, following the referendum results.
