Diplomatic relations between Iran and Qatar have become strained following events in March, with Tehran alleging that Qatari authorities are holding Iranian pilots captive. Qatar, on the other hand, maintains that it has no information regarding their fate.
Iran has criticized Qatar for delaying access for Iranian officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of pilots reportedly captured during the Middle East conflict, a claim that Doha disputes.
On March 2, Qatar’s military announced the downing of two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers after they allegedly targeted the emirate’s oil facilities. At that time, Qatar did not provide any information about the pilots’ fate, according to AFP.
In late July, the Iranian military reported recovering the body of one pilot killed during an attack on March 2 that targeted Al-Udeid Air Base, which is located in Qatar.
Qatar Claims Efforts Made to Locate the Pilots
Over the weekend, Iran stated that three of its pilots had been captured by Qatar and called on the Red Cross to facilitate their release. Qatari diplomacy categorically denied this claim and condemned what it termed deceptive statements from the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian government responded on Sunday, stating that aviation experts from Iran have been waiting for months to travel to Qatar to investigate the pilots’ disappearance.
General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, head of the Iranian Armed Forces’ Committee for Missing Persons, stated, “Instead of denying the facts and obstructing the investigation of the truth, the Qatari government should have allowed the expert team to enter Qatar.”
Qatar refuted this accusation as well, claiming it had invited an Iranian team as early as April to be informed about the search and rescue efforts for the pilots, an invitation to which Tehran did not respond.
According to Reuters, Iran has a similar dispute with Kuwait, accusing it of withholding information regarding four Iranian military personnel it claims are being held captive. In May, Iran announced that four members of its Revolutionary Guards maritime patrol had mistakenly entered Kuwaiti territorial waters, while Kuwait asserts that the four intended hostile actions on its territory.
