Workers from the construction company De Brand made a remarkable discovery while renovating a building in Belgium, finding gold bars valued at €9 million concealed within a wall. They promptly alerted the police and informed the project owner about their unexpected find.
According to Gert Gillaert, the CEO of CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, the gold bars were numbered, which has raised suspicions regarding their origin. “The initial reactions were of surprise and amazement. This is a unique experience,” Gillaert stated.
The police seized the precious metal and transported it to a secure location. The East Flanders prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to determine the gold’s provenance. One theory suggests the discovery may be linked to old fraudulent schemes or money laundering, leaving its legal status uncertain. It remains unclear whether the charity organization will be able to claim ownership of the assets.
Should the gold be transferred to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, Gillaert noted that it could significantly enhance their outreach programs for homeless individuals and those in precarious situations.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to avoid the site. Despite the warnings, treasure hunters have flocked to the building, hoping to find more valuables. Police have reassured the public that the area has been thoroughly searched and that there is nothing else of value left. Furthermore, they caution that the site poses serious safety risks as demolition work is currently underway.
