Egnatia Makes History by Reaching Europa League Group Stage

Egnatia has achieved a historic feat by becoming the second Albanian team to qualify for the group stages of a European competition, following Skenderbeu’s accomplishment 9 years ago.

Egnatia secured a spot in the Europa League play-off after a spectacular comeback against Shamrock Rovers in the third qualifying round. In the first leg, played at home, the Irish side triumphed 3-1, putting them in a favorable position to advance.

In the second leg held in Albania, Egnatia started strong, with Adjessa scoring in the 4th minute. The aggregate score was equalized just seven minutes later when Albanesse struck to make it 2-0.

The Albanian champions kept up the momentum, and Gruda netted the ball in the 20th minute, bringing the score to 3-0 and giving Egnatia the lead on aggregate. They added a fourth goal before halftime, with Adjessa completing his brace.

However, in stoppage time of the first half, hope flickered for Shamrock as Ndreca, the left-back for the home team, received a second yellow card and was sent off. Even with a one-man advantage, Shamrock was unable to capitalize. Instead, Egnatia scored a fifth goal in the 58th minute, with Albanesse also achieving a brace.

The visitors managed to score through Burke with just 15 minutes remaining, but Egnatia held firm, concluding the tie with a 6-4 aggregate victory.

Egnatia Becomes Second Albanian Team to Qualify for European Group Stage

Egnatia is set to face Norway’s Lillestrom in the Europa League play-off. Should they be eliminated, they will compete in the single group stage of the Conference League. If they succeed, they will secure a place in the main draw of the Europa League.

This marks the second time in history and the first time in nine years that the Albanian league will have representation in a European group stage, according to Football Meets Data.

Skenderbeu was the first Albanian team to qualify for a group stage, achieving this in 2017 during their Europa League run.
