Explosion in Moscow Restaurant Considered Terrorist Act Following Woman’s Attempt to Smuggle Bomb
In a tragic incident in Moscow, a woman reportedly attempted to carry an explosive device into a restaurant, resulting in an explosion that has left three people dead and 21 others injured. The explosion occurred around 7:55 PM local time at Kudrinskaya Square.
According to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC), the woman approached the restaurant with a box, claiming it contained a gift. However, she was stopped by a security guard who was stationed at the entrance.
The blast killed the woman, the security guard, and one patron. Authorities are treating the event as a terrorist act, with a criminal case opened under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code, which pertains to terrorism.
Sources suggest the intended target may have been guests attending a private event on the restaurant’s terrace. Reports indicate that the explosive may have been detonated remotely, and there is speculation that the woman was unaware of the contents of the package she carried.
Prior reports have indicated that the restaurant could have been hosting a celebration for a Russian general’s birthday. Journalist Yan Matveev noted that General-Major Vladimir Seliverstov and General-Lieutenant Alexander Yaroshevich have birthdays on August 1, while the commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Alexander Chayko, celebrated his birthday on July 27.
