Donald Trump Launches Controversial Paid Service for Truth Social

On August 1, Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) unveiled a new subscription service designed to give users faster access to posts from former President Donald Trump and other prominent accounts on the Truth Social platform. This initiative has sparked significant backlash, with critics claiming it exploits Trump’s office for financial gain.
The newly launched service, known as “Truth API,” aims to provide companies with licensed, real-time access to market-relevant posts from the platform. Kevin McGurn, the interim CEO of TMTG, noted that this new service is intended to ensure timely access to critical information.
Trump’s account on Truth Social, @realDonaldTrump, remains the most followed on the platform, boasting around 13 million followers. It serves as a venue for announcing key political decisions, including updates on international issues like the conflict with Iran.
The timing of this service has been contentious, particularly following criticism from Democratic senators Adam Schiff of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. They have called on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate whether TMTG’s actions contravene legal regulations.
As the Trump family holds significant shares in TMTG, this move is viewed as potentially damaging to ordinary investors, raising ethical questions about the intersection of business and politics.
