Witnesses across New Zealand reported a spectacular sight recently as two massive fireballs blazed through the sky, prompting sonic booms that startled residents. “Absolutely insane. I thought it was a burning plane,” recounted one observer, highlighting the unusual occurrence.
The first fireball was seen on the North Island on Tuesday night just after 10:20 PM local time. Only days earlier, another fireball had crossed the sky over the South Island on Sunday evening.
Footage captured by dashboard cameras, security systems, and specialized devices illuminated the sky with a brilliant glow followed by a “huge explosion.” Numerous witnesses shared their experiences on social media, describing the fireball as enormous, orange, with a violet tail. One observer noted seeing black soot emanating from it.
The loud noise created quite a stir on the ground. One witness reported hearing a “deep and loud sound” that frightened local birds, while another said their cows were agitated by the commotion. In Ruby Bay, residents expressed curiosity about the source of the sound, likening it to the noise made when someone hits a trash can with a stone.
Steve Wyn-Harris, director of Fireballs Aotearoa, clarified that witnesses experienced a “sonic boom,” indicating the object may have approached close to the ground. The organization is now urging residents in the southern part of the North Island to look for remnants, known as meteorites. Wyn-Harris advised people to examine the area for “a black stone that normally shouldn’t be there.”
In the past 150 years, only ten meteorites have been confirmed in New Zealand. The recovery of these remains is challenging due to low population density, rugged terrain, and inadequate infrastructure.
However, the situation is improving. Fireballs Aotearoa operates 200 cameras throughout the country, and the extensive network of dashboard and security cameras currently provides one of the best monitoring systems globally for tracking such phenomena.
