CFR Cluj is gearing up for a significant season opener as they face Armenian side Alashkert on Thursday, July 30, at 21:30. This match marks the second leg of their second preliminary round in the Conference League, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
In a pre-match press conference, head coach Antonio Folha discussed the squad’s morale, qualification chances, and the threats posed by their opponents.
Folha chose not to address the financial challenges facing CFR Cluj, stating that he would repeatedly provide the same answer when queried about the issue.

Folha noted that the recent 5-0 victory over FC Voluntari has boosted confidence within the team. “The group is happy because they secured a solid win. It’s always easier to work after a success. Now we must focus and continue our efforts,” Folha stated.
When asked about any updates from the club’s management regarding the financial situation, Folha redirected the focus to the upcoming match against Alashkert. “You can ask me this question every day. I will always respond that the most important thing is tomorrow’s match. It’s an elimination game, and we must concentrate solely on what we have to do on the pitch,” he emphasized.
Folha does not view CFR Cluj as the favorite for the matchup, despite the return leg taking place at home. “In such matches, I am always cautious. The only real advantage we have is playing in front of our own supporters, which is crucial. Everything else is open. It’s 1-1, and we need to deliver a very good performance to qualify,” he added.
“Alashkert Has a Very Dangerous Attack”
The Portuguese coach refrained from singling out any specific player from the opposition but warned that Alashkert possesses enough quality to create problems. “I don’t usually name opponents’ players, but I repeat what I said before the first leg. They have a very strong attacking unit, with players very quick in transitions and direct play.
They also have a solid midfield, and if we don’t perform at our level, we will face challenges. I hope my team plays as well as they did in the last match and remains focused to win.
We need to be prepared for any scenario. If I had a choice, I would prefer to win in the first 90 minutes. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, we will be ready as a team,” Folha concluded.
