A man in Ternopil required amputation of his leg after self-applying a tourniquet while under the influence of alcohol. The medical director of the Ternopil City Emergency Hospital, Svitlana Vus, confirmed the incident to reporters.
The patient arrived at the hospital on the morning of July 26, explaining that he had applied the tourniquet as part of a personal experiment. He admitted to consuming alcohol during this time.
According to Vus, he was curious about the sensations and effects of cutting off blood supply to his limb. He even set a timer but fell asleep and missed the alarm. He woke up the next morning to find the condition of his leg severely compromised.
The leg had been deprived of blood flow for approximately 12 hours, and despite the medical team’s efforts to save it, they were unsuccessful. Vus stated, “He was fully aware of the amputation and consented immediately. We tried every possible method, including surgical interventions and electrical stimulation, and assessed blood flow in the limb, but we could not save it.”
On July 27, the man underwent a high amputation of his leg and is currently in the intensive care unit.
