Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko publicly thanked General Oleksandr Syrskiy for his exceptional leadership during the defense of Kyiv in February 2022. Klitschko emphasized their closer collaboration during a critical period when the city was on the brink of encirclement by enemy forces.
In a heartfelt message, Klitschko noted, “I want to thank General Oleksandr Syrskiy. We got to know each other better in February 2022 during the defense of Kyiv. When it was necessary to make difficult decisions swiftly, as the enemy stood at the capital’s gates, nearly surrounding it, few can imagine what transpired and what actions were taken to protect the heart of our country. The situation was at a breaking point.”
For his efforts in organizing the defense of Kyiv, Syrskiy has been awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine and granted honorary citizenship of the city. Klitschko remarked on the tremendous responsibility Syrskiy bore while operating under highly challenging conditions.
“Criticism may arise, but such judgments can only come from military personnel who understand the processes and the battlefield situation. General Syrskiy fulfilled his duty without media coverage, interviews, or social media posts—a difficult obligation under the circumstances he faced. Thank you, General, for your cooperation and professionalism!” Klitschko added.
Additionally, he wished success to the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and assured that the Kyiv community will continue to support the country’s military efforts.
