The administration of President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Ed Miliband as the UK’s Foreign Secretary under new Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham. According to reports, this decision may create a “point of friction” in the so-called “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly due to Miliband’s views on climate and energy transition, as he is a vocal supporter of renewable energy.
The Telegraph has noted that the Trump administration had warned Burnham in the days leading up to Miliband’s swearing-in that this appointment could pose issues.
In addition to energy disagreements, Washington recalls Miliband’s strong opposition as part of the previous cabinet under Prime Minister Keir Starmer to the use of British bases by US Air Forces in the conflict against Iran, according to Agerpres.
Former Trump Adviser: Burnham Ignored Warnings from White House
The British newspaper also spoke to Steve Bannon, a former adviser to Donald Trump and a leading figure in the MAGA movement, who criticized the appointment of “self-identified socialist Ed Miliband” as a significant offense to the special relationship between Washington and London. Bannon confirmed that Burnham was cautioned by the White House against appointing Miliband as Foreign Secretary, yet the new Prime Minister “did not care and went ahead with the appointment anyway.”
Immediately following the inauguration of his new government, Burnham contacted Donald Trump, marking his first official conversation with a foreign leader after taking office. An official statement following the discussion suggested that it was cordial, with the new Prime Minister emphasizing his commitment to defense and security as a priority, which was likely intended to reassure Trump, who has routinely criticized Europeans for neglecting their defenses and relying on the United States.
However, shortly after being appointed as Foreign Secretary, Miliband articulated several concerns that diverged significantly from those of the Trump administration. He stated, “We will work with others to tackle the climate crisis, strengthen alliances for international development, and reform international institutions so that they work for all countries, including the poorest people in the world.”
