Ukrainian President discusses military strategy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has conducted pivotal discussions with top military commanders, including Mikhail Drapatyi, the commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces, Oleg Apostol, the commander of the Air Assault Forces, and Deputy Chief of the General Staff Volodymyr Horbatyuk. These meetings focused on assessing the current front-line situation and the future strategy for Ukraine’s defense forces.
Zelensky emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of Ukraine’s military actions and the strategies to compel Russia to end the conflict with a satisfactory peace and guaranteed security for Ukraine. He stated, “This involves various components, and I want to hear how our defense and security commanders envision this. Tomorrow, I have key discussions. Ukraine must achieve its objectives, and it will.”
Context
- On July 15, the Ukrainian Parliament approved the resignation of the government led by Yulia Svyrydenko. Following the announcement that Mykhailo Fedorov, who had served as Minister of Defense for the past six months, would not be included in the new Cabinet, some citizens protested, demanding his reinstatement and a replacement for Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
- Media reports suggested that Fedorov’s dismissal could be related to conflicts with Syrskyi. According to Ukrainian publications, during a meeting of the Servant of the People faction on July 15, Zelensky explained to lawmakers that he could no longer tolerate the ongoing disputes between Fedorov and Syrskyi, who had “stopped listening to each other.”
- On July 18, the Financial Times reported that Zelensky was considering the possibility of dismissing Syrskyi amid the protests.
