Ukrainian border guards are establishing a so-called “kill zone” to effectively eliminate threats in the event of a breakthrough attempt from Belarus.
Currently, defensive positions are being fortified with the construction of anti-tank ditches, multi-level barriers, and rows of concrete “dragon teeth”.
A fence made of reinforced mesh, standing approximately 4 meters tall, extends for tens of kilometers along the border, with plans to secure the entire border area.
The military is also enhancing surveillance of waterways as part of these defensive measures.
Context
- In May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia might be preparing operations from Belarus against Ukraine or NATO countries. Ukrainian intelligence continues to detect attempts by Russia to further involve Belarus in the war against Ukraine. According to Zelensky, Russian military leadership is considering five scenarios for expanding the war through northern Ukraine. In light of this, the Security Service of Ukraine announced “unprecedented security measures” in regions bordering Russia and Belarus.
- In June, Alexander Pyvnenko, commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, assessed the potential threats from Belarus as real, contingent upon the reinforcement of occupying forces by 70,000 troops.
- Belarusian self-proclaimed president Alexander Lukashenko stated in July that he has no intention of involving the Belarusian army in the conflict. He emphasized that Belarus is not interested in war and seeks peaceful resolution, asserting that Belarusian soldiers would not be sent into such a conflict.
