New Air Force One Lacks Key Defensive Measures, Experts Warn

The new presidential aircraft for Donald Trump, provided by Qatar, is missing key defensive countermeasures that its predecessor had, according to officials cited by the New York Times. Experts have pointed out that the absence of these capabilities poses potential risks when the president travels abroad.
The newly donated Air Force One, which Trump used earlier this week for a trip to Turkey, does not have the same advanced missile defense systems as the older model. This information comes from several officials familiar with the aircraft’s modernization process.
Experts warn that the lack of these capabilities on the Boeing 747-8 aircraft creates significant security concerns for its use overseas. This situation was highlighted when the Trump administration abruptly decided to leave Turkey aboard the old Air Force One, following directives from the Secret Service, as reported by the New York Times.
Former officials not involved in the aircraft’s modernization expressed skepticism about whether there had been enough time to implement all necessary security modifications, given the project’s rapid timeline.
“Time did not allow for all the usual modifications for Air Force One, so some security, communication, and support elements are missing,” said Frank Kendall, former Secretary of the Air Force.
He emphasized that, considering the current situation with Iran, this might raise legitimate concerns, especially with Trump’s visit to Turkey, which borders Iran.
Trump Advocated for Swift Operation of the Aircraft
The heightened security risks draw further attention to Trump’s demands for a rapid modernization of the donated 747 to replace the aging fleet of official presidential aircraft.
Trump has consistently urged for the new plane to be operational as quickly as possible and has frequently complained that the old presidential aircraft was not impressive enough for international travel.
Congress members have requested the administration to disclose whether the conversion of the Qatar aircraft, overseen by the Air Force over the past year, has ensured adequate security improvements.
The safety of the aircraft is vital not only for the president but also for the large delegation that includes White House staff, Secret Service officials, journalists, and guests traveling aboard.
White House Response
The White House has not answered specific questions regarding the new aircraft’s capabilities but defended its safety.
“The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft, equipped with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the president and his staff,” stated Steven Cheung, the communications director, in a press release.
However, authorities acknowledged that the temporary aircraft did not possess all the equipment typically found on an Air Force One during the announcement that it was ready to transport the president, as noted by the New York Times.
“No risks were taken regarding security, safety, or mission communications,” the Air Force stated in a release dated June 19. “However, the team compromised on certain less-utilized mission sets that Boeing must provide to ensure operational capability for the next 40 years,” officials clarified, without detailing what is meant by “less-utilized mission sets.”
Forced to Return Home on the Old Plane
The older aircraft that served as Air Force One were equipped with a defense system designed to counter guided missiles. It is expected that this capability will be included in the new Boeing planes.
Various components of the defense systems are visible on the old Air Force One, under the wing and on the tail of the aircraft. These components are not present in photographs of the new Qatar plane, according to a third former Air Force official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss security protocols.
The missile defense systems on Air Force One have rarely been used throughout the aircraft’s history, yet they have always been considered essential to the aircraft’s security features.
Despite the renewed intense U.S. strikes on Iran, American officials do not believe there is currently a plan from Iran to assassinate Trump during this period.
Nevertheless, the Secret Service was sufficiently concerned during Trump’s stay in Ankara that it compelled the president to switch planes when departing the country.
In announcing the change, Trump provided a different version, claiming he flew on the old plane so that the new one could leave earlier and make stops at American military bases to be showcased to the troops because the aircraft is “magnificent.”
