Ukraine Updates Driver’s License Regulations to Align with EU Standards

New license regulations in Ukraine

Ukraine has announced significant changes to its driver’s licensing regulations, which aim to bring the country’s standards closer to European Union norms and improve road safety, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Under the new rules, the validity period for driver’s licenses will vary based on vehicle type. Licenses for motorcycles and passenger cars (categories A1, A, B, B1, BE) will now be valid for 15 years.

In contrast, licenses for drivers of trucks and passenger transport (categories C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, D1E, T) will be valid for five years. This shift is part of a broader effort to enhance accountability among commercial drivers.

Igor Klymenko, the Minister of Internal Affairs, noted that the reinstatement of mandatory medical examinations for license renewals will be a crucial factor in determining eligibility to operate vehicles. He emphasized the importance of health assessments, particularly for those responsible for passenger and freight transportation, as they will need to renew their licenses every five years and undergo medical check-ups.

Previously issued permanent driver’s licenses will remain valid until the expiration date indicated on them. Additionally, during license exchanges every five or fifteen years, drivers will not need to retake exams unless otherwise specified by law.
