According to reports, Serhiy Arbuzov intends to represent the so-called “new territories,” including the occupied regions of Crimea and Sevastopol, in the upcoming Russian State Duma elections. These elections are scheduled for September 18-20.
Arbuzov is affiliated with the political party “Just Russia,” which is one of the parliamentary forces in Russia.
Background
- Arbuzov served as the first deputy prime minister in Mykola Azarov’s government from 2012 to 2014 and fled Ukraine following the Euromaidan protests. He is currently wanted in Ukraine, facing multiple investigations, including allegations of embezzlement and abuse of power.
- Another former Ukrainian politician, Andriy Derkach, also a fugitive, is already serving as a senator in the Russian parliament after being elected last year.
