U.S. Ambassador Discusses Trump’s Stance on International Commitments

U.S. Ambassador Herbst has expressed skepticism about President Donald Trump’s potential withdrawal from certain international obligations. He emphasized that a complete retreat from global leadership would signify a significant shift in U.S. policy since World War II, a scenario he does not foresee.
Herbst pointed out that Trump has not fully embraced the international institutions established post-World War II that have ensured remarkable successes and security for both the U.S. and the world. While Trump believes the U.S. is taking on too much, Herbst asserts that a reduction in commitments would mark a departure from the leadership model that has characterized American policy since the U.S. entered World War II in 1941. “I assume we will not take that path,” he remarked.
He noted that discussions within Trump’s circle and broader public debates in the U.S. include ideas for reducing foreign commitments, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. However, he clarified that this view does not represent the dominant stance within the administration.
Furthermore, Herbst warned that Russia remains a direct threat to U.S. interests, highlighting the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine in the current geopolitical landscape.
