Trump’s Envoys Will Only Visit Kyiv for Meaningful Negotiations

U.S. envoys Vitaly Vitkoff and Jared Kushner have indicated that they will only travel to Kyiv if it facilitates meaningful negotiations in the ongoing peace process. According to sources, both officials have been in daily contact with representatives from Kyiv and Moscow, although this information has not been publicly disclosed.
This stance arises amidst criticism from Kyiv, which is pushing for a more active and personal involvement from American negotiators in resolving the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously expressed the need for greater U.S. engagement, asserting that statements alone are insufficient.
Despite this, Vitkoff and Kushner remain key players in Washington’s diplomatic efforts with both Ukraine and Russia. They maintain regular communication with Ukrainian and Russian officials, although their work often occurs without public visits or full diplomatic delegations.
Context
- Bloomberg has noted that Trump’s representatives have visited Moscow multiple times for meetings with the illegitimate Russian president, Vladimir Putin, but have not yet traveled to Ukraine.
- In an interview with “Fakty Tydnia” (ICTV) published on April 20, Zelensky commented that there was no need to sensationalize a potential visit by Vitkoff and Kushner, as contact with them is already established. “I believe that their visit is more necessary for them than for us,” he added.
- In early May, the Kyiv Independent reported that Vitkoff and Kushner are hesitant to travel to Kyiv due to a lack of progress in negotiations regarding Ukraine and a shift in Washington’s focus towards the conflict with Iran. Later, Zelensky mentioned that U.S. representatives might come to Kyiv “around the transition from spring to summer.”
