Goal Scored: Embolo at the 10th minute

As the first half concluded, Algeria showed a strong performance, with Ibrahim Maza narrowly missing the target with a shot inside the penalty area at the 45+2 minute mark.

In the 37th minute, Switzerland had a good chance when Zakaria headed a free-kick just over the goal.

Switzerland, a regular in the knockout stages of the World Cup, aims to replicate its recent success from the last three tournaments. They face Algeria, a team that has only progressed past the group stage for the second time in its history. Algeria’s qualification was secured through a controversial 3-3 draw with Austria in its final group match.

Had Algeria held on to a 3-2 lead in that game, they would have finished second in their group and faced Spain in the round of 16. Instead, they now hope that Switzerland will provide a more manageable challenge.

For Switzerland, the only slip-up came in their opening match, where they squandered multiple chances against Qatar, resulting in a last-minute equalizer. Successive victories against Bosnia (4-1) and Canada (2-1) secured them the group title.

Petkovic Meets Former Players

Vladimir Petkovic, who managed Switzerland from 2014 to 2021, expressed his thoughts before facing his former players:

“Football has become universal, and everyone knows each other. There are no real secrets anymore. I don’t think knowing each other gives a huge advantage. However, it will be a pleasure to compete against them again.”

Petkovic acknowledged that Algeria has conceded too many goals, with five of the seven allowed being from outside the box. Despite this, he noted the positive aspect of scoring five goals throughout the tournament and emphasized the team’s growth.

Yakin: “Our Playing Style Has Evolved”

“I have great respect for how he works and treats his players, allowing them freedom on the pitch. This familiarity could be an advantage or a disadvantage, but our style has significantly evolved since Petkovic’s tenure.”

Yakin expressed gratitude for the team’s qualification for multiple tournaments and optimism about the upcoming match.
