Iga Swiatek to Face Taylor Townsend at Wimbledon, Shares Anecdote About Venus Williams

Iga Swiatek, currently ranked third in the world, is set to kick off her Wimbledon campaign on June 30 at 3:30 PM against American Taylor Townsend, who holds the 79th position in the WTA rankings. The Polish tennis star recently shared an interesting encounter with Venus Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion.

Swiatek, who made a surprising win at Wimbledon last year, described how she was initially hesitant about her performance leading up to the tournament. Her victory at the All England Club stood out as a significant achievement in an otherwise unremarkable season.

In an interview conducted on the very grounds where she triumphed in 2025, Swiatek reflected on her experiences as a Grand Slam champion, having secured six titles to date. She recounted a unique memory involving Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, highlighting the respect she holds for the veteran player.

Iga Swiatek Remembers a Unique Moment with Venus Williams

“I remember she was probably the first person on the WTA tour who literally held a door open for me for about 10 seconds so I could pass through. It was something… wow, Venus Williams held the door for me,” Swiatek recalled, visibly cherishing that moment.

Swiatek noted her surprise at Williams’ calm demeanor and wisdom, which she sensed from the way the seasoned player carried herself.

Despite Venus Williams still competing at 46 years old, having celebrated her birthday on June 17, Swiatek has not yet faced her in a WTA match.

Iga Swiatek Seeks First Grass Win in 2026

In contrast to last year, when she reached the All England Club after her first grass final at Bad Homburg—where she lost to Jessica Pegula—Swiatek’s situation this year is less promising. This year, she participated in the same WTA 500 tournament, but her first round was a bye. In her next match, she fell in three sets against Emma Navarro, the world’s 24th ranked player, with scores of 5-7, 6-2, 3-6.

This marks Swiatek’s seventh appearance at Wimbledon, a tournament where she previously performed modestly despite being the 2018 junior champion. Her best results include reaching the round of 16 in 2021, where she lost to Ons Jabeur, and the quarterfinals in 2023 against Elina Svitolina.

In this edition, she will begin against Townsend, known for her aggressive playing style and strong net game. Townsend, who won the doubles title at the All England Club in 2024 alongside Katerina Siniakova, has qualified for the main draw five times and reached the second round in 2018 and 2019, marking her best performance.

This match will be the first professional meeting between Swiatek and Townsend.
