Canada made history at the 2026 World Cup by qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time, thanks to a 1-0 victory over South Africa, secured by a goal from Stephen Eustaquio.

Following the match, Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch delivered an emotional speech in the locker room, praising his players for their performance.

Clearly moved, Marsch told his players that they had made their mark in Canadian football history and encouraged them to reflect on their journey together over the past two years.

The coach believes that the national team’s success will inspire a new generation of children to take up football.

“Boys, think about the two years we’ve spent together. Think about how we talked about respecting the plan, our identity, our aggressive style of play, your quality, and the character you’ve shown.

You are Canadian heroes. Canadian heroes! Heroes for the future children of this country who will play this sport. Football has a bright future because of you.

You should be very proud of who you are. You should be very proud of this match. You fought every moment. You are Canadian heroes,” Marsch stated, according to BBC.

Canada will now face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco. The two teams are set to compete on June 30 at 04:00 Romanian time.

I believe we worked hard for this victory. We wanted to bring joy to all Canadians. We kept believing, we kept fighting, and I couldn’t imagine a better ending. I think it was an extraordinary goal, but when I shot, I felt like the whole team shot with me. Everyone put a little of their energy into that shot, and the ball reached the net. I’m very happy. In knockout matches at the World Cup, confidence is crucial. Now we will meet Morocco or the Netherlands, and who knows? If we have a good day, we can produce a surprise. Maybe we don’t have the same individual quality, but if we keep believing and working hard, things can turn in our favor. Everything I do is for my family, my parents, my girlfriend, my daughter, my friends back home, and everyone who has supported me.” – Stephen Eustaquio, the scorer of Canada’s winning goal.
