Aryna Sabalenka Discusses Misconceptions Before Wimbledon Debut

Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked No. 1 in the WTA, has generated significant buzz just before the start of Wimbledon, taking place from June 29 to July 12. In a candid interview, she opened up about the stereotypes she faces.

Today, she will compete against Serbia’s Teodora Kostovic, ranked 184th, in the first round at Wimbledon. The match is scheduled to start after 5:30 PM and will be available for live streaming on HBO Max.

Despite being regarded as one of the most positive players in tennis, the Belarusian acknowledges that she does not always convey that impression at first glance.

Aryna Sabalenka: “I Understand Why People Think I Am a ‘Bitch'”

Sabalenka explained that her distinct facial features and “cold” demeanor often lead to misconceptions about her character.

“When you see me for the first time, you might think I’m a ‘bitch’ because of my serious face. I completely understand why people think that. First impressions just don’t help me. When I walk around looking serious and emotionless, I realize I can come off as very aggressive. So, I totally get why people think that. But those who know me better will understand that this is just how I was born,” Sabalenka stated.

Badosa’s Initial Impression of Sabalenka: “I Thought She Was a ‘Bitch'”

She shared how she had to overcome initial barriers even with her close friend on the circuit, Paula Badosa.

“When we met, I openly told her, ‘Wow, I thought you were a ‘bitch!’ and she immediately replied, ‘I thought you were a ‘bitch!’ too. Then I explained that was obviously not true and that we could be friends. I realized we are actually very similar and that it’s just a mask and attitude we have on the court,” Sabalenka recounted.

Aryna Sabalenka Aspires for Her First Wimbledon Title

While grass is not her favorite surface, Sabalenka has achieved notable results at the All England Club in recent years, reaching the semifinals in 2021, 2023, and 2025.

With four major titles to her name, including the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024 and the US Open in 2024 and 2025, she aims to claim her first Wimbledon title this year.

“At this point in my career, I don’t focus too much on the rankings. I’ve learned over the years that when you start focusing on the rankings, things begin to spiral out of control. I’m concentrating solely on myself. I hope that by the end of this tournament, I can remain at the top of the rankings.” – Aryna Sabalenka
