Extreme Heat Hits Ukraine: Recognize Heat Stroke Symptoms and Responses

Ukraine is currently facing unbearable heat, making it critical to recognize the symptoms of heat stroke and know how to respond if it occurs. According to the Ministry of Health, heat stroke may present several symptoms including confusion, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, reddened skin, and skin that feels dry and hot to the touch. Other signs can include brief loss of consciousness, elevated body temperature, and fatigue.
If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, immediately call 103 to connect with a doctor and potentially dispatch an ambulance. Next, move the affected person to a shaded and cool area. Begin cooling them down by applying cool, damp towels or ice packs to areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin to help lower body temperature. If the person is conscious, offer them small sips of water. If they are vomiting, position them on their side. Continuously monitor their breathing, pulse, and consciousness until medical help arrives.
Stay safe during this extreme heat and share this important information with others.
