U Cluj Faces Significant Loss as Jovo Lukic Joins Bosnia at World Cup

Jovo Lukic, a 27-year-old striker, is currently representing Bosnia at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, with his team set to face the USA on July 2 in San Francisco. His participation brings at least $451,000 to both U Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, but significantly leaves U Cluj without their top player during critical early-season matches.
Lukic has been a standout player, helping Bosnia advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time. He has already attracted attention for a potential transfer that could bring in over €3 million for U Cluj.
Financial Impact of Lukic’s World Cup Participation
During the World Cup, Lukic is generating approximately $11,000 per day in revenue for his clubs, totaling around $451,000 from FIFA due to his participation. This amount may increase if Bosnia progresses past the USA, adding $11,000 for each additional day in the tournament.
The funds from FIFA will be split between U Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, the clubs where Lukic has played over the past two years. This means both clubs will benefit financially from his World Cup journey.
As of now, Lukic has made five appearances for the Bosnian national team, scoring once in a match against Canada.
Lukic’s Absence Affects U Cluj’s Early Matches
Having played only a limited role in the World Cup so far, with 62 minutes against Canada and brief appearances in other matches, Lukic will not be available for U Cluj’s opening fixtures. His absence is felt as U Cluj prepares for their Europa League qualifying rounds against Dinamo Kiev on July 9 and July 16, along with the Supercupa României match against Universitatea Craiova.
U Cluj will need to adapt swiftly without Lukic, particularly as he is likely to be a focal point in the transfer market this summer.
Last season, Lukic recorded 20 goals and 3 assists in 39 games for U Cluj, showcasing his significant contribution to the team.
